Andy Is The Main Character In The Film Who Has No Previous

Andy is the main character in the film who has no previous criminal record prior to this conviction. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for murdering his wife and her lover. He maintains he is innocent of the murders, which we find out later to be true. When he arrives in prison, he does not bring any prison experience with him- he knows nothing about the inmate codes and norms, is alone, and completely new to the prison environment. The first two years of his sentence he suffered greatly from abuse and rape by other more aggressive prisoners. He resisted prisonization and tried to stay isolated and to himself, but the other prisoners took advantage of him since he had no other prisoners to protect him. Over the next 20†¦show more content†¦He was active in the prison economy and helped prisoners obtain any type of goods that are not available for sale in prisons and says, â€Å"There must be a con like me in every prison in America, I’m the guy who c an get it for ya...yes sir, I’m a regular Sears and Roebuck.† Red has a lifetime sentence and fits under Clear, et al’s role of ‘jailing’. Since he is one of the few prisoners who can get things from the outside world, he is highly respected and prisoners keep from causing him trouble because preservation of his role and status benefit the whole community. According to the roles defined by Edwards, Red is primarily an ‘inmate representative’ but also ‘penitent.’ Red is portrayed as a leader of their social group with much power but he uses little force. He is often called on to negotiate and help calm disagreements and resolve problems between prisoners. He has been living within an institution for much of his life and even confesses to his friend, â€Å"I don’t think I can make it on the outside Andy, I been here most of my life. I’m an institutional man now† and â€Å"in here i’m the guy who ca n get things for ya†¦.outside I wouldn’t even know where to start†. Red still applies for parole with the hope that he can receive an early release and believes that he has been reformed and done his time for his crime.
