Architecture in Nature

Animals and insects have been able to develop solutions to assorted jobs in nature that are still faced by the worlds. The type of constructions that these animals/ insects build has a varied structural system and signifier. Their accomplishments in membrane design, airing, insularity, H2O proofing, drainage etc. are huge.[ 1 ] The grounds why all animals build are to protect themselves from the physical environment and from the other species. So, the architecture of these animals should be strong plenty to protect them from other species and besides should be immune to the physical environment.[ 2 ] To protect from the other species or marauders, these animals build in such a manner that either they submerge with the background or expression like something that can be mistaken for an object that is non nutrient. Protection for a white ant hill from marauders is done wholly by its stuff and that of the nest tubing built by weaver bird is done by its construction.[ 3 ] Temperature control can be seen by comparing the nests of humming birds in the low lands and the 1s in cragged parts. The 1s in low lands have shallow nests without plume liner and the 1s in the cragged parts have deep nests with plume liner. The stats show that when the temperature runing was from 16- 27deg. C outside, inside it was ice chest and about 6 deg. C lesser.[ 4 ] Even the white ant hills have a good thermic insularity due to their midst walls that do non let major fluctuations in the interior conditions. Experiments have shown that though the interior temperature fluctuated with the outer temperature, it was invariably high and damped.[ 5 ] Observations have shown that spider webs in shaded countries faced north-south and those in good illuminated countries confronting east-west. These orientations were majorly to acquire maximal sum of visible radiation to heat them in the shaded countries and the orientation was so in the lighted countries to avoid over heating so they had more clip to capture their quarry.[ 6 ] In countries with high rainfall, particularly the tropical countries, the major issue with the species there is the direction of H2O and protection from deluging.[ 7 ] Like, the termite hills are like lifting columns and capped like a mushroom on the top. And a series of downward directed projections facilitate the tally off of H2O. The chief life country is non at the base of the construction, it is good above the degree of flood H2O.[ 8 ] Connection between the animals and nature can be clearly seen in how they build, like a bird’s nest Tells us about the climatic conditions of the country where it is. It is good accepted that some of the architectural admirations belong to the carnal land, for illustration, beehive is a perfect mix of geometry and construction.[ 9 ] Animals are responsible for some of the most impressive architecture architectural design. They construct in order to transform their environment, better their quality of life, and supply safety and security.[ 10 ] Most of the edifices now a twenty-four hours are cubelike in construction. However, it is non the most ideal in context to nature because it has a really rare happening in nature, so it is non the most efficient or stable construction. The most stable construction is a diamond construction that has a tetrahedron construction that is something like pyramids.[ 11 ] Termites have built the tallest of all non manmade constructions with utilizing simple stuffs like Earth and spit. It is singular to see that these constructions have fantastic thermic conditioning and airing.[ 12 ] Everything in nature is created by a perfect blend of geometry and free flowing signifiers. The range of larning from nature is so much that it can non be understood by one individual, but it besides doesn’t average that we halt our enterprise to research and larn from nature.[ 13 ] The geometry in nature starts from a really basic degree. The diatoms in the saltwaters, snow crystals etc. Snow crystals have a really sharp geometry. They have a start like construction and travel on to organize hexagons. Even with such a chip geometry, no two snowflakes have of all time been likewise.[ 14 ] In nature there are really small groundss of regular hexahedron as geometry, because when it comes to the stableness factor, regular hexahedron is one of the worst thoughts.[ 15 ] In nature, we would loosely sort construction into two: the construction that makes the assorted constituents of nature, that is workss and animate beings ; and the other is the construction created by these constituents. The major in these is the 1 created by animate beings, or the carnal architecture.[ 16 ] The tallest constructions in the carnal universe are built by white ants, who are considered to be the maestro designers of the animal universe. The largest termite hills are found in Australia and Africa. If white ants were of the size of an mean homo, so the comparative tallness of a termite hills would travel up to 2000ft, which is about 180 floors that would be the tallest edifice in the universe.[ 17 ] The Australian and African assortment of termite towers is designed for chilling. These are made up of midst walls to retain wet in and heat outside. There are canals and channels that run through the countries of hill that walls that are porous or have tiny airing holes. These channels and canals are for circulation of air and stale air fumes. The lower most part of these hills is the life and working countries of white ants that is the coolest country.[ 18 ] Architecture gives pattern to construction and construction to model.[ 19 ] Nature is the unfastened book of cognition lifted to cosmic proportions. It is a force of intelligence that dwarfs human comprehension. A force that can uncover the solutions to jobs that have plagued world since the beginning of clip.[ 20 ] Nature is the supreme designer and interior decorator of all living things. And it has had 5 billion old ages clip to practice- to germinate and hone its designs. It is nature that can make constructions that can defy forces 1000s of times its ain weight. It is nature that can make self-acting energy systems that need no mechanical power for chilling and warming. It is nature that can make constructions that adapt and change harmonizing to altering conditions.[ 21 ] By working with nature, non against it, one can do clever designs that can non be damaged by seeking to defy the extremes of nature.[ 22 ] The Yellow Tree House Restaurant, New Zealand was designed by a house named Pacific Environments. It is inspired through many signifiers found in nature -the chrysalis/cocoon protecting the emerging butterfly/moth, possibly an onion/garlic clove signifier hung out to dry. It is besides seen as a lantern, a beacon at dark that merely glows yet during the twenty-four hours it might be a semi camouflaged growing, or a tree garrison that provides an mentality and that offers safety. The program signifier besides has loose similarities to a sea shell with the unfastened ends gyrating to the Centre.[ 23 ] It is a simple egg-shaped signifier wrapped ‘organically’ around the bole and structurally tied at top and bottom, with a round program that is disconnected apart on the axis with the rear floor part raised.[ 24 ] Masdar City Center, UAE, is an approaching undertaking 17 kilometer from Abu Dhabi and is inspired by unflowers that ever face the Sun. It was designed by Laboratory for Visionary Architecture ( LAVA ) . They are elephantine umbrellas, with a design based on the rules of helianthuss that will supply movable shadiness in the twenty-four hours, shop heat, so near and let go of the heat at dark. It isthe world’s first nothing C, zero waste metropolis powered wholly by renewable energy beginnings. The solar powered ‘sunflower’ umbrellas gaining control the sun’s rays during the twenty-four hours, crease at dark let go ofing the stored heat, and open once more the following twenty-four hours. They follow the projection of the Sun to supply uninterrupted shadiness during the twenty-four hours and can be used anyplace in the universe including comeuppances.[ 25 ] Lotus Temple was built in 1986, in New Delhi. The temple gives the feeling of a half-open Nelumbo nucifera flower, afloat, surrounded by its foliages. Each constituent of the temple is repeated nine times. The Lotus temple reaches a tallness of more than 40m. One can see 27 elephantine white petals of marble in a Nelumbo nucifera form, jumping from nine pools and paseos. All around the Nelumbo nucifera are paseos with beautiful curved bannisters, Bridgess and stepss, which surround the nine pools stand foring the drifting foliages of the Nelumbo nucifera. Apart from functioning an obvious aesthetic map, the pools besides help air out the edifice. The Nelumbo nucifera, as seen from outside, has three sets of foliages or petals, all of which are made out of thin concrete shells. The outermost set of nine petals, called the ‘entrance leaves’ , unfastened outwards and organize the nine entrywaies all around the outer annulate hall. The following set of nine petals, called the ‘outer leaves’ , point inwards. The entryway and outer leaves together cover the outer hall. The 3rd set of nine petals, called the ‘inner leaves’ , appears to be partially closed. Merely the tips open out, slightly like a partially opened bud. This part, which rises above the remainder, forms the chief construction lodging the cardinal hall. The top of the construction is a glass and steel roofing as the Nelumbo nucifera is unfastened at the top.[ 26 ] Architect Fariborz Sahba chose Nelumbo nucifera as a symbol for the Bahai temple, as a belief in possible pureness of human spirit and as a metaphor for truth that out of ignorance and force we will originate to make a new age of peace and cosmopolitan brotherhood.[ 27 ] Referencing: [ 1 ]Dissertation: ARCHITECTURE IN NATURE: Lesson FOR HUMANS Pg No. 2 [ 2 ]Dissertation: ARCHITECTURE IN NATURE: Lesson FOR HUMANS Pg No. 18 [ 3 ]Dissertation: ARCHITECTURE IN NATURE: Lesson FOR HUMANS Pg No. 18 [ 4 ]Dissertation: ARCHITECTURE IN NATURE: Lesson FOR HUMANS Pg No. 20 [ 5 ]Dissertation: ARCHITECTURE IN NATURE: Lesson FOR HUMANS Pg No. 21 [ 6 ]Dissertation: ARCHITECTURE IN NATURE: Lesson FOR HUMANS Pg No. 22 [ 7 ]Dissertation: ARCHITECTURE IN NATURE: Lesson FOR HUMANS Pg No. 23 [ 8 ]Dissertation: ARCHITECTURE IN NATURE: Lesson FOR HUMANS Pg No. 24 [ 9 ]Dissertation: SYSTEMS IN NATURE THEIR IMPLICATION ON ARCHITECTURE Pg No. 2 [ 10 ]Dissertation: SYSTEMS IN NATURE THEIR IMPLICATION ON ARCHITECTURE Pg No. 3 [ 11 ]Dissertation: SYSTEMS IN NATURE THEIR IMPLICATION ON ARCHITECTURE Pg No. 4 [ 12 ]Dissertation: SYSTEMS IN NATURE THEIR IMPLICATION ON ARCHITECTURE Pg No. 5 [ 13 ]Dissertation: SYSTEMS IN NATURE THEIR IMPLICATION ON ARCHITECTURE Pg No. 15 [ 14 ]Dissertation: SYSTEMS IN NATURE THEIR IMPLICATION ON ARCHITECTURE Pg No. 16 [ 15 ]Dissertation: SYSTEMS IN NATURE THEIR IMPLICATION ON ARCHITECTURE Pg No. 17 [ 16 ]Dissertation: SYSTEMS IN NATURE THEIR IMPLICATION ON ARCHITECTURE Pg No. 26 [ 17 ]Dissertation: SYSTEMS IN NATURE THEIR IMPLICATION ON ARCHITECTURE Pg No. 31 [ 18 ]Dissertation: SYSTEMS IN NATURE THEIR IMPLICATION ON ARCHITECTURE Pg No. 32 [ 19 ]Architect Eugene Tsui, hypertext transfer protocol: //www.tdrinc.com/architecture.html [ 20 ]Architect Eugene Tsui, hypertext transfer protocol: //www.tdrinc.com/media.html [ 21 ]Architect Eugene Tsui, hypertext transfer protocol: //www.tdrinc.com/media.html [ 22 ]Architect Eugene Tsui, hypertext transfer protocol: //www.tdrinc.com/media.html [ 23 ]hypertext transfer protocol: //www.archdaily.com/16445/yellow-treehouse-restaurant-pacific-environments/ [ 24 ]hypertext transfer protocol: //www.archdaily.com/16445/yellow-treehouse-restaurant-pacific-environments/ [ 25 ]hypertext transfer protocol: //www.newarchitecture.biz/2010/11/masdar-city-center-lava-laboratory-for.html [ 26 ]hypertext transfer protocol: //www.architecture-student.com/architecture/lotus-temple-delhi-innovation-in-architecture/ [ 27 ]hypertext transfer protocol: //www.sahbaarchitect.com/

Philip Anderson

Which of the investment alternative: Provides the highest returns to the client? Provides the highest profits to Stuart&Co.? In order to find the right result for each question, I suppose the client of each situation will invest $10,000. I will make a lot of calculations to support my opinion. The process listed as Exhibit1, Exhibit2 and Exhibit 3. Both Alternative A and C will provide the highest returns to the client depending on the period of investment. In this case, A has the highest investment return (See Exhibit 3). In this situation, ending redeemable value (ERV=P (1+T) n) and gain on investment are higher than B and C.Other than that, the cost of investment (Cost investment = Initial payment+ Total Load or Commission) is lower than B and C. So, the ROI (ROI= (Gain on investment + Cost of investment)/cost of investment) is higher than B and C. This is because A has the highest initial payments, but B and C need to take the load out from the same initial payments. Moreover, A has a lower management fee. Instead, B has a higher load and management fee; C has a higher load. Alternative B will provide higher profits to Stuart & Co (See Exhibit 2). In this situation, the total profit of Stuart & Co. s the sum of load or commission and management fee. B is higher than A and C. This is because B requires paying load or commission at 5% to purchase. Besides, B has a high percentage management fee. 2. Which alternative should the top management of Stuart & Co. want Philip to recommend to his client? Is the company’s control system designed to ensure that choice? (The case mentions several measures used to reward the branch managers). I think alternative B is what the top management wants because it will bring the maximum profit for the company. The company’s control system is not designed to ensure this choice. For example, the company emphasis on† developing and nurturing profitable relationship with as many clients as possible, and the speci fic products and service sold to clients should be dictated by the needs of those clients. † Obviously, B is not the one which should be dictated needs of clients because clients are pursuing high ROI. At the beginning of this investment, clients need to pay 5% of his initial payment (P) to company for load or commission, which reduces his initial payment. Also, B has the lowest average annual total return (T). During the same length period, lowest P and T will cause the lowest ending redeemable value (ERV). Besides, B has the highest investment cost. Therefore, B’s ROI is lower than A and C. 3. If Philip recommends the highest profit choice (for the company), is he acting unethically? From the perspective of the company, he is acting ethically. This is because maximizing company’s profit is company’s ultimate goal. On one hand, Philip has helped his clients make profit from their investment. On the other side, he helps his company to achieve highest profit. It is the ideal result of company’s control system. Therefore, he is doing an excellent job at his position. It is ethical. However, from the perspective of clients, he is not acting ethically. Clients hope their investment advisor can help them to achieve highest ROI. This means they want higher gain on investment and lower cost of investment, which just conflicts with company’s benefit. So if Philip did not consider clients’ benefit but just focus on company’s benefit, his acting is unethical.

Choosing the Right College

Choosing a college is one of the biggest decisions a person will make in his or her life. It will mold the future for the individual and open numerous windows of opportunity for careers. Being such a huge decision it requires a lot of thought and research. Many questions need to be asked in order to make a decision, as well as visitation to many schools in order to know which one will work best for the student. The student should ask his or herself if they would like to attend a larger school or smaller school, private or public, and take into consideration the money he or she would like to spend in order to get a quality education. These main questions can narrow down the choices and make the process less stressful on the student. In this paper I will be comparing and contrasting the benefits and downfalls of two completely different schools; a private Christian school in Tennessee, Freed- Hardeman University, and a public state school in California, UCLA. Would a student be looking for a bigger college? Would he or she feel more accustomed to a â€Å"city-life† type of atmosphere? If so, UCLA would be the college of preference.UCLA is located in Westwood, Los Angeles, California. In simpler terms, this college is right in the heart of one of the biggest cities in all of America (â€Å"UCLA† – College Crunch). Current enrollment at UCLA is around twenty-six thousand undergraduates, eleven thousand, five hundred graduate students, and approximately four thousand faculty members. This all adds up to about thirty-seven thousand, nine hundred people on the campus each day of the active semester. As many have been informed, UCLA is one of the top colleges in the United States.Ranked in the top 20 undergraduate colleges in the nation, one can expect that he or she has a tall order to fill if dreaming of attending the UCLA undergraduate school. Preparations for college begin with the high school career of a peer. The college requires a system of c ourses taken in high school before even being considered, just as most big colleges do. With a total of fifteen total preparatory courses, English and Mathematics courses are the most important. One with aspirations of attending must complete four English courses, and three courses in math, although four are highly recommended. On top of that, two years of history and lab sciences, two years of foreign languages, and one year of VPA (or art) and college preparatory courses are required. That takes care of the high school classes. In addition to the required courses, a minimum GPA of three point four (3. 4) for non-residents of California is required throughout high school. Consequently, no grades lower than a â€Å"C† will be acceptable (â€Å"Admission Requirements† –Bruins Walk). UCLA also requires that one takes the ACT Assessment plus the ACT Writing Exam or, the SAT Reasoning Exam.If a student plans to go into a specific felid of study such as those of Engin eering or other majors, certain math exams are highly recommended. Those will only the make the journey of admissions easier on both parts. UCLA offers a great variety of majors that one could follow and pursue on the path of collegiate level studying. Choices that one may not be able to find too many other places are those such as Marine Biology, Film and Television, African Languages, etc. It is important to pick the major, then the college when thinking about the future.Other fields of practice include Architecture, Dentistry, Engineering, Law, Medicine, etc. As one may expect, such an extravagant undergraduate college is not going to be cheap. UCLA can be very expensive for in-state students, let alone students wishing to come for out of state. It’s total cost per year will add up to be around thirty- six thousand dollars, with a tuition being around twenty thousand of the thirty-six. Most students do research and receive financial-aid and attain scholarship money. Doing this however, requires a lot of work in high school. In contrast, what if the student didn’t want a big, city-life college? What if he or she was accustomed to a smaller, more private environment? If so, he or she might consider attending Freed- Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee. In contrast to UCLA, FHU is a much smaller, religious, private college. The current enrollment at FHU is around two thousand total students with a percent of males being forty- six percent to the female’s fifty-four. As you can see, FHU is much smaller (â€Å"FAQs† – FHU). Founded in eighteen sixty nine,Freed has always had a reputation around the south for being a wonderful school. The minimum GPA to be submitted into the school is two point five (2. 5) and the minimum test scores are a nineteen on the ACT and nine hundred and ten on the SAT. As for the classes, an individual must meet his or her state requirements where he or she attends high school. The student life a t Freed is different from UCLA. At Freed, there are more private social clubs, choral groups, sports teams, and such. FHU’s athletic program is a member of the NAIA (D1) and the Transouth Conference. Also, FHU is affiliated with the Church of Christ. Around eighty-three percent of the student body belongs to the Church of Christ, with a seventeen percent belonging to other Christian views (â€Å"FAQs† – FHU). All students attending FHU must live on campus unless either living with a family member or have credited a number of hours through the university. In turn, freshmen, and generally sophomores, are required to live on campus. The total cost to attend FHU from out of state is around twenty-eight thousand dollars a year.Tuition alone is about thirteen thousand. Ninety percent of the students receive some form of financial aid and there is a little over seven million dollars awarded annually in scholarship money. Since FHU is a private college, this money is rai sed privately and through the school. They receive little to no government help. In ultimate conclusion, there are a variety of options out there. There have been two researched here and there are thousands of others. One must learn to explore his or her options. What does he or she want? One may possibly want a fast pace, â€Å"city† lifestyle while attending college. He or she may want more of a â€Å"party-life. † Or, on the other hand, a student may want a more â€Å"one-on-one†, private, religious lifestyle. In the end, education is the key to life. One must choose which path he or she wants to take to achieve the end result; a college degree. By comparing and contrasting two different schools, students will have a better understanding of the options that are available and the many choices they will have to make.

Analysis of othello Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Analysis of othello - Essay Example In order to make the paper more clear and easy to understand, I will start by giving a brief biography of the author. What is rather interesting is that nobody knows Shakespeare's true birthday. The closest date the bibliographers came up with is the day of his baptism on April the 26th, 1564. Traditionally, a child is baptized three days after his birth, thus we may assume William to have been born on April the 23rd. There are only two portraits of William at present, the engraving by Martin Droeshout and the monument in Stratford's Holy Trinity Church in Stratford. William married when he was 18 to Anne Hathaway who was much older. The couple had eight children who later inherited Shakespeare's wealth (William Shakespeare Facts). Shakespeare started writing at the age of 29, composing the first of his 154 sonnets Venus and Adonis in 1593. His last play The Two Noble Kinsmen was written in 1613 when he was 49 years old. The dramatist died in 1616 at the age of 52. It is remarkable that he had composed on average 1.5 plays a year since he first started in 1589 (William Shakespeare Facts). As I have mentioned earlier, in my paper I will give a literary analysis of the Shakespeare's tragedy Othello, before starting to analyze the main characters that are: Othello, Iago, and Desdemona, I would like to present a brief summary of the play. The main purpose of Shakespeare in tragedy Othello is to produce a mood that defies a way a person perceives his/herself and the world. The play thoroughly develops such subjects as racism, chauvinism, jealousy, love, hatred, enviously, arrogance, and fraud. Shakespeare begins Othello, presenting a story about a black general, Othello, who falls in love with and later marries, Desdemona, a young white daughter of a Venice politician. Being a general, Othello appoints Cassio to be chief lieutenant, unintentionally creating an enemy in face of Iago who thinks he is more liable for the position. Being in rage, Iago develops a plan to destroy both Cassio and the gullible Othello, who considers Iago to be a reliable and honorable friend and companion. To begin with, Iago does everything in order to cause the dismissal of Cassio from his position. Later in the tragedy Iago directs all his efforts to ruining the life of Othello. Knowing Othello's naivety and being familiar with his weak sides, Iago hints Othello that his wife, Desdemona, has engaged in relations with Cassio. At first Othello is unwilling to believe Iago's accusations, though Iago manages to confirm his words when, with the help of machinations, Desdemona's handkerchief is found in Cassio's possession. Being temperamental by nature, Othello enrages and throttles Desdemona. Emilia, Iago's wife, finds out about her husband's crafty designs and reveals them to Othello. Othello, realizing his horrifying and uncorrectable mistake, and commits suicide.

God's plan for worship from Genesis through Revelation Research Paper

God's plan for worship from Genesis through Revelation - Research Paper Example Man’s sole purpose while living in the garden was to worship God at al times, obey His commands and praise Him for the wonderful work He had done in creating the entire universe. But what actually is worship? Several instances of worship have been mentioned in the bible right from the first book, Genesis, to the last book in the bible, Revelation. God’s greatest commission to humanity from the beginning was to worship Him and honour Him as his creator and sustainer as well as the provider for all that man needed in the world. This reverence was to be shown by simply bowing to God in reverence for the works he had made during man’s life. It has however not been easy for humanity to accomplish this task as he is rocked on either side by the enemy, the devil. Anderson defines worship as inner form of communication with God (Anderson, 1992). Worshiping is the only way through which we pour our hearts to God and tell Him of all lour tribulations in this world â€Å"A rise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your hearts like water in the presence of the Lord. Lift up your hands to Him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street† (Lamentation 2:19). God however teaches humanity the way of worship both in the old as well as in the new testaments. In this paper I will discuss the principles of worship both in the Old Testament and the New Testament.... The ways of worship are however not changed as these remains the same throughout the entire bible. God gives strong commands in worshiping Him in the Old Testament. The repercussion for not worshipping God according to the Old Testament requirements are felt immediately, such included stoning one to death upon doing something which is contrary to what God has commanded. ‘If a person sins and does what is forbidden in any of God’s commands, even though he does not know it, he is guilty and will be held responsible. He is to bring to the priest as a guilt offering a lamb from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way, the priest will make atonement for him for the wrong he has committed unintentionally, and he will be forgiven. It is a guilt offering, He has been guilty of wrong doing against the Lord’ (Leviticus 5: 17- 19). The regulative principle The kind of authoritative worship which the Lord commands in the Old Testament was pegged on the mosaic laws which had strong commands on how the worship of the Lord was to be conducted. Failure to comply with the requirements of God during worship times was punishable by immediate death of the victims. God thou shall not have any other god before me for I m a jealous God, I punish those who sin against me up to their forth generations and blesses the thousands who comes before me to worship me (Anderson , 1999). The regulative principle note throughout the Old Testament required that the people of God do not add to anything to what God had commanded them to do neither were they to remove from God’s commandments what He had stipulated. Such actions were to be punished immediately as has been shown in the previous instances. He says in Deuteronomy chapter 12 vs

Unionization in the United States - Research Paper Example The most vibrant unions in the United States are usually among the public sector workers including doctors, teachers, police etc. They often targets on issues relating to the agreement and right on wages and increment on wages or if management tends to violate the laws and agreement on the rights of employees according to the contract. History of unionization in the United States: As the United States very rapidly developed various inventions and innovations, so it developed quite fast. Soon the State had been converted from a mere agricultural to a big industrial state. This change in the United States awakened the need for more and more laborers to handle the industries. these laborers were those people who were usually looked down upon in the society and the strong and powerful employers would advantage from the condition of the poor laborers and therefore, would mistreat them and take extra work, beyond their physical capabilities. Therefore, this is how the labor unions started to form so as to stand against the management to give the required right of the co-worker. Moreover, there even was a wage-bargain issue and above all, the major issue which was considered by workers at that time was the prolonged work hours which would result in workers making endless and extremely tiring efforts. The labor unions in the United States started as a protest against the long working hours. The working hours would not at all be convenient and hence this fact was realized in the 19th century and a step towards a protest was taken in the 1820s. During this period, the workers combined together to form a team to reduce the work hours from 12 hours to 10 working hours. Legislation to these workers was granted in 1837. Formation of the first labor union in the United States: According to the Illinois labor History society, after imposing this law, even then the employers would take extra work and wrong advantage of their desperate workers. The workers were poor and quite weak in power as compared to their highly strengthened employers. They realized they could not do anything alone. Therefore the minor labor unions of small cities decided to combine with the labor unions of other cities as well and form a large labor union. This is how the first labor union came into being in 1886. The first labor union was named as the â€Å"National Labor Union† (NLU). Formation of other labor unions in the United States: The working hours had now been reduced to 10 hours from 12 hours. Even this decrease was not enough for them, so, in 1886, the Nation Labor Union campaigned to reduce the work hours to a more convenient, manageable and less tiring 8 work hours. Then onwards, now labor groups started to fo rm in that era. These new labor unions included: â€Å"Knights of Labor†. â€Å"American Federation of Labor† (AFL). The founder of American federation labor was Samuel Gompers. Devaluation of the labor unions and their protest against it: As the Industrial Revolution came into soaring mechanism, the requirement for laborers once more amplified. This period was also noticeable by mass colonization numbers, which enlarged the number of laborers in the labor group. This also caused the value of the individual worker to diminish. This was due to some of the laborers, who were unskilled or not deserving were allowed to be replaced by the hard working and the

Stem Cell Legislation - Research Paper Example This paper shall discuss the history of stem cell research legislation in the United States. It shall discuss how such history compares with similar statutes around the world. The current legislative state of affairs shall also be considered, as well as the possible direction of the laws in the United States should be taken. Various studies and literature shall be considered to establish a clear and comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Discussion What is the history of Stem Cell Research Legislation in the United States? According to Deem (2004), stem cell research on humans was first seen in the 1960s, with some success achieved in the treatment of a patient with severe combined immunodeficiency disorder. Following this success, efforts to achieve a similar success was attempted in the treatment of immunodeficiency disorders and different types of leukemia and blood disorders (Deem, 2004). Based on the success achieved for the abovementioned diseases, many people have expressed their support for the necessity of stem cell research. ... He claimed that carrying out such type of research is a threat to the unborn human life, and the government must therefore not support such procedures. The 109th and 110th Congress implemented bills which were set to overturn Bush’s position, however Bush vetoed both bills (Science Progress, 2009). In the 109th Congress, both houses approved the bill (subsequently signed by Bush) which prevented the creation of human fetuses which had the sole purpose of destroying them, as well as harvesting their body parts (Cord Bankings, 2010). A bill was also passed in order to support research into the creation of stem cell lines without damaging embryos (CBS, 2009). In 2005, the US Congress set forth the passage of the Stem Cell Research and Therapeutic Act of 2005. This was a national law which established new public banking and research facilities; this law was also set to encourage medical practitioners in increasing awareness of cord blood donations to pregnant women (Cord Blood Ban king, 2010). President Barack Obama in 2009, ended the ban on allowing federal taxpayer dollars to fund significantly broader research on embryonic stem cells. Obama’s decision provides support for research on healthier and better ways to create treatment for diseases (CBS, 2009). How does it compare to comparable statutes in the rest of the world? The controversy regarding the passage of stem cell laws around the world are more or less similar various territories. Most of these laws and countries with stem cell research laws seem to agree on the significant difference that the research can bring to various sick individuals. In Africa, there are few laws which regulate embryonic stem cell research and the only country which actually has a significant research

Case6 - Article Example For this reason, the state has encouraged several new fund-raising suggestions, including the one advanced by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has tried to find new firefighting funds with an insurance surcharge on all home and business owners that would likely raise $130 million extra yearly. Some of the cash will be used to cover the cost the state’s fire department called Cal-Fire This is a general alternative that the state would have to finance state services in California because since Cal-Fire’s budget comes widely from the state’s general fund incurred by all California’s taxpayers. According to San Diego senator, Christine Kehoe, the citizens are not paying enough for fire protection and argue that frenzied buildings in rural areas increase the burden of state of firefighters. In this regard, the senator has introduced a bill in the state legislature similar to what the LAO is proposing an annual fee paid by resident who live in rural areas to help offset the cost of firefighting. CalFire’s mission has changed as well. The service is mandated with protecting 31 million acres of wild land which includes the states timber stands, watershed and huge agriculture lands. CalFire protects lands that benefit the public in general. I agree with the sentiment that fire fighting could be financed by tax. The local government of respective states should introduce tax on people so that whenever fires break out, it can be easily contained because of the availability of fire fighting resources. It is rational to argue that if there was a taxpayer staying in the place with no or little risk of a fire or wildfire, they should be able to pay for services if a fire or wildfire was close their home. If this could be the case, I think that Tennessee could get ways to utilize those funds to enhance firefighting in where they lack the resources. I concur with the argument that If a charge for service was introduced, it would have to be conducted

Customer loyalty in Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Customer loyalty in Business - Essay Example Customer loyalty is considered to be the propensity or inclination of the consumer to select a particular product or service, which meets his or her needs. In the business domain, customers are labeled as brand loyal as they are most likely to select a particular brand as compared to the alternatives available. Customer loyalty is the product of well structured, organized and planned programs, which concentrate on the retention of customers (East, Wright & Vanhuele, 2008, 45). Research suggests that customers, who become targets of customer loyalty programs, are most likely to remain loyal to a particular brand. For customer or brand loyalty, habit is considered to an important element. It is considered to be the main element, which can influence the overall progress and development of the organization. It is used by different organizations in order to retain existing customers and to win potential customers. As mentioned earlier, business is mainly dependent on it customers. Researc hers have identified five main types of customer loyalty, which are discussed below.Monopoly loyalty is considered to be that loyalty in which the choices of customers are restricted. It is rare and extreme case and the loyalty of the customer is away from loyalty and devotion. Research suggests that monopoly loyalty is considered to be resentful. From customer satisfactions surveys conducted, it was concluded that consumers were dissatisfied and discontented when their choices were restricted.(Reinchheld, 2006, 103). Cost of change loyalty In theory, each and every supplier is in competition with one another, which indicates that their customers may use substitutes. However, in actual practice, customers are most likely to remain loyal to their existing supplier because of difficulties they experience in switching suppliers. Turning to substitutes only takes place when the customers are dissatisfied with their existing product or service (Reinchheld, 2006, 105) . Incentivised Loyalty Incentivised loyalty is considered to be the result of excessive marketing to promote the product or service in the market. It might influence consumers, who are not using their own financial resources(Reinchheld, 2006, 109). Research suggests that majority of the people in United Kingdom are most likely to have more than one loyalty cards of different competing super markets, petrol stations or airlines. Loyalty points are considered to be discount tools, which would assist in meeting their needs and requirements that wider range. Habitual Loyalty Habitual loyalty is often termed as â€Å"everyday form of repeat business† (Reinchheld, 2006, 111). Time is considered to be an asset and therefore, several consumers resort to familiar habits and routines in order to achieve with maximum utilization of time. For instance, a weekly to the same superstore is conducted as it is convenient and habitual. Colleagues meet in the same restaurant for lunch(Reinchheld, 2006, 112). Consumers are most likely to visit the same petrol situation in order to save time. From this perspective,

Normal and Abnormal Psychology Essay Example for Free

Normal and Abnormal Psychology Essay Psychology is a science that studies the human mind and behavior, to understand and explain thoughts, emotions, and behavior of individuals. Psychology can be applied in different ways, such as mental health treatment, performance improvement or enhancement, self-help and other areas impacting the health and daily life of individuals. Psychology is generally a broad field of science, and there are multiple subfields or areas within it. Two subfields in particular that are going to be discussed in this paper are normal and abnormal psychology. An individual is categorized within these two subfields according to whether their social behavior and way of thinking is common or totally out of the norm. Normal Psychology studies the common or average human behavior of individuals. This particular area focuses mainly on understanding the way the individual thinks and reasons throughout their everyday life. This area does not involve any disorders or psychological illnesses, but instead it researches the human mind in trying to better understand the individual’s thought process and behavior. An individual who would be categorized under normal psychology would not display any mental illnesses, disorders, psychological problems or un-normal behavior. Abnormal Psychology studies abnormal human behavior as well as psychopathology of the individual. Abnormal refers to something that is not normal or out of the norm. This particular area of psychology focuses more on research and treatment for the abnormal behavior displayed by the individual. This area of psychology covers a wide variety of disorders such as depression, sexual deviation, obsession-compulsion, anxiety, mood, developmental, etc. A good way to tell if there is a case of abnormal psychology is anytime the behavior of an individual is causing problems in their life or is disruptive to them or other people. There are a number of perspectives used to treat abnormal psychology. Three main perspectives are: behavioral, medical, and cognitive. The behavioral perspective focuses on the observable behaviors. The medical perspective focuses on biological causes on the mental illness. The cognitive perspective focuses on how their internal thoughts and reasoning contribute to the psychological disorders.

Introduction To The Activity Based Costing Accounting Essay

Introduction To The Activity Based Costing Accounting Essay Traditional managerial accounting is at best useless, and at worst dysfunctional and misleading. (Shank, 1994) The Relevance Lost: The rise and fall of Management Accounting published by Theodore Johnson and Robert Kaplan in 1987 marked as the revolutionary criticism of the traditional costing system. Traditional Costing System was developed in early 20s when companies were almost 99% labour intensive (Kidd, 1994), no automation (Jan Emblemsvag, 2008) and production processes were austere. Significant changes in most manufacturers product market and production technology demand more accurate cost allocations (Krumwiede and Roth 1997) and focusing more on labour productivity may not be the best solution for the present day manufacturing and service organizations (Gunasekaran et al, 1999). It was hailed as the beginning of change for the better in the world of accounting (Sharman, 2003). In the notoriety book, their disparagement was centred on the passà © cost allocation technique that distorts production cost for decision-making purposes. Instead of providing solutions to management, traditional costing system had failed in predictable ways (Daly, 2010). Activity Based Costing In 1988, Cooper and Kaplan disseminated the Activity Based Costing (ABC) system to overcome hindrances and the peanut-butter spreading cost allocation of traditional costing system. Gunasekaran and Sarhadi (1996) (Vol 1_1_4) found that the development and endorsement of ABC had been stimulated and largely persuaded by Cooper and Kaplan especially in the manufacturing sector. It is arduous to find an academic or practitioner journal that does not talk about ABC in the accounting world and it soon it began to widely spread to the non-manufacturing sector. It was perceived to be the solution to the management accounting needs of organizations (Sharman, 2003). It was also said that Activity-Based Costing is clearly the most significant managerial accounting development (Harrison Sullivan, 1996). In fact some have portrayed it as cure-all for all kinds of problems (Doost, 1997). Since then ABC plays a significant role as a management tools and gained its popularity to the academicians, practitioners and industries. ABC was initially designed by George Staubus in the United States during the 80s. ABC was promoted as a system that would reduce the level of arbitrary cost allocations associated with traditional costing systems and result in more accurate product costs (Baird et al, 2004). Many authors often depicted ABC to one simple and powerful word which is accurate (Cooper and Kaplan 1988; Dugdale, 1990; Innes and Mitchell 1991; Morrow, 1992; Bhimani and Piggott, 1992; Turney 1996; Krumwiede and Roth 1997). Accuracy in product costing is vital particularly in making decision and also in alleviating organization in cost reduction and profitability purposes. Inaccuracies created by improper allocation of costs can lead disastrous pricing, product profitability and customer profitability management decisions (Hardy et al, 2002). (Working paper series 2004) The core of ABC is the activity concept (Turney 1991). According to Turney (1996), ABC is a process which assigns costs to product according to the activities and resources consumed or generally a method of allocating indirect costs to cost objects. Cost drivers and cost activities are the terms synonymous to ABC. ABC enhances cost allocation by using smaller cost pools called activities (Wegmann, 2010) and costs are then traced to these activities by keys called cost drivers (Cooper, 1990). Gunasekaran et al (1999) stated that the ultimate goal of ABC as a cost allocation system is to trace the production costs generated by the production of a good or service, as accurate as desired, to the causing activities. ABC is not only basis for computing accurate product costing, but it plays a vital role in management in managing costs. The 1980s is seen as the advent and widespread use of management philosophies such as Just-in-Time (JIT), Balanced Scorecard, Total Quality Management (TQM), and Theory of Constraint (TOC). Huczynski (1993) described it as the age of the management guru. The appetite for new forms of managing is strong and ABC is quickly recruited to feed it and soon after, ABC evolved from a cost allocation method to a management philosophy (Jones and Dugdale, 2002). Two reputable systems which was derived from ABC philosophy was Activity-Based Management (ABM) and Activity-Based Budgeting (ABB) (Cooper and Kaplan, 1998). Second Phase of ABC: Activity-Based Management Johnson (1988) argued that companies should manage activities alongside with the costs based on the relying principle of activities consume resources and products consume activities and this was supported by Ostrenga (1990). As discussed, ABC system was initially presented as new way to establish more accurate product costs compared to the traditional costing system. However, ABC soon began to enter its second phase, in which it became known as Activity-Based Management (ABM). The second phase of ABC is perceived to be the rational development of ABC, in which it focuses on the management of indirect activities, at various levels beyond direct productions and activities where it still continues to draw its back on the existing ABC. This development is regarded as an improvement to the value received by customer and the profit achieved. Johnson (1988) still maintained and applies the existing ABC rules where the activity-based information would focus managers attention on underlying cost drivers and profit unlike the distorted cost provided by traditional costing system. This influenced Turney (1992) where he voiced a similar opinion and suggested that ABM system seek two goals, which are common to organizations which can be reached by focusing on managing activities. The first is to improve the value received by customers and the second is to improve profits by providing this value. Activity-Based Budgeting In todays arduous economic environment with the growing inflation rates, shrinking sales volumes and rocketing business expenses, the Activity-Based Budgeting (ABB) system could be a safeguard in stabilizing and strengthening an organizations operation (Pockevi iÃ…Â «tÄ-, 2008). Countries worldwide then began to practice and implement such strategy into their organizations. ABB is developed based on the management philosophy of activity-based costing (ABC), which is considered to be similar to zero-based budgeting (Shane, 2005) and it measures how members of an organization allocate their effort among activities performed and effortless to design. Pockevi iÃ…Â «tÄ- (2008) conducted a study and tested ABB on the agricultural sector in Lithuania. With an ABB system in place, major constraints can be identified while maintaining the future operations of the organizations. It can measure the efficiency within an organization process with a clear picture and understanding by linking all the individual budgets and the department in the organization. ABB is also known for its exposure of non value costs where waste can then be eliminated to reduce cost. ABCs pitfall and Time-Driven ABC: A new ABC development? Despite much attention on the ABC model since the appearance in the 1980s, interest gradually decreased during the 90s (Gosselin, 2006). ABC slowly began to experience its pitfall. As the global competition increases, the need of efficient and effective tools to fit business strategy are greatly in demand and ABC gradually went into the accounting worlds slump. Gosselin (2006) argued that ABC failed to succeed in practical use in todays management practices; this was also supported by few authors such as ÃÆ'-ker and Adigà ¼zel (2010) and Velmurugan (2010). Gosselin (1997) began to argue that a so-called ABC-paradox existed. Despite the various articles published in journals, books, and its involvement in the academic world and also being endorsed by consulting companies, it is quite ironic of how implementation of ABC is still relatively low. Innes and Mitchell was the first few to conduct surveys on the implementation of ABC in companies in 1995, their studies showed that only 21% adopted ABC in the UK. Bjornenak (1997) followed their footstep by conducting surveys in Norway and found that 40% implemented ABC in their companies whereas in the other part of the world such as the Australia, Ireland, the US, Dutch and Italy reportedly to have 12.5%, 11.8%, 17.7%, 12%, 10% respectively (Nguyen and Brooks, 1997; Clark et al, 1999; Groot, 1999; Cinquini et al, 1999). Many large companies, which tried to implement ABC in the 90s, abandoned it due to change in competitive circumstances and the birth of new and develop management tools. Many of those who argued that ABC, although effective in allocating cost, it does not necessarily contribute to the overall effective of business decisions (Fladkjà ¦r and Jensen, 2011). The information provided by ABC may be extraneous and not as accurate as most users believe. ABC is also regarded as not necessary for most companies systems (Fladkjà ¦r and Jensen, 2011). Kaplan and Anderson (2007) brought up the case of Hendee Enterprises which is a Houston-based manufacturer of awnings where they argued that the ABC software took three days to calculate costs for the companys 150 activities, 10,000 orders and 45,000 line items (Wegmann, 2010). In 2003, Kaplan started to redesign the ABC system when many argued that it is too complex and time intensive to implement. This has led to the much anticipated new approach of ABC, the Time-Driven ABC (TD-ABC). He claims that the new ABC development, TD-ABC, reveals excess capacity, processes faster, able to provide high accuracy and can be well supplied from existing IT-systems, such as ERP (Kaplan and Anderson, 2007). Kaplan (2007) went again to argue that TD-ABC skips the activity-definition stage and hence the allocation of costs to multiple performed activities. They also argued that TD-ABC is a simplified version of the current ABC system at that time (Everaert Bruggeman, 2007; Everaert et al, 2008; Kaplan Anderson, 2004; Max, 2007; ÃÆ'-ker Adigà ¼zel, 2010). This was also supported by Demeere et al (2009) and Wegmann (2010) where TD-ABC is hail to be an improved activity-based costing system compared to its previous development. TD-ABC differs from the existing ABC system where the time estimates require to calculate driver rates can be obtained by direct observation or by surveying managers (Kaplan and Anderson, 2010). This saves time and is able to reduce the cost of implementation and updating the system. He further argued that managers are considered the more reliable source concerning accuracy of information on time consumption and activities compared to existing ABC system where information are derived from employees who tend to be bias. Consequently, with TD-ABC, managers are able to generate accurate information and encounter fewer blunders. Impact of the new ideas on both companies and consultant Soon after its establishment, TD-ABC began to receive a growing interest among academicians and a growing number from 9 to 67 in the period of 2003 to 2009. This was presented by Google Scholar and since then TD-ABC has shown a positive trend in the online world (Alsamawi, 2010). Demeree et al (2009) also began to notice the story behind TD-ABC and tested TD-ABC at an outpatient clinic. For instance, Demeree et al. (2009) implemented TD-ABC at an outpatient clinic. They have gathered data through direct observations and interviews with department heads and outpatient clinic managers. To register different time consumptions for relevant activities a stopwatch was utilized. This process was repeated 3 months later to ensure that consistent results were obtained. This data gathering method was recorded as a success. Other authors point out that TD-ABC brings conceptual shortcomings connected to the use of time estimates (Cardinaels Labro, 2007). Gosselin (2007, p.649) concluded that TD-ABC is the most recent development in the field of activity-based costing methods, but does not solve the conceptual problems inherent to ABC. Conclusion

Differences between competing internationally and competing globally

Differences between competing internationally and competing globally Except in a few cases, companies in natural resource based industries such as oil and gas, minerals , rubbers and lumber often to find it necessary to operate in the international arena because of attractive raw material suppliers are located in foreign countries. The Difference between Competing Internationally and Competing Globally Competing internationally A company competes only in a few foreign markets, It is an international multinational i.e. competing internationally, Competing globally A company competes in virtually the entire worlds major countries and global competitor is pursuing a market presence on cost continents. CROSS-COUNTRY DIFFERENCES IN CULTURE, DEMOGRAPHY AND MARKET CONDITIONS Small firms are now competing in foreign markets where there is significant variation in market conditions. It poses a much bigger challenge than when just competing at home. Small firms enter into foreign market initially to know the responsiveness to cross-country difference in culture, demography and market conditions. It complicates the task of competing with other players. This is the difficult and challenging task for small firms entering into foreign markets. One objective is to balance pressures and be responsive to local situations of each country. Also there is varied pressure for lower costs and prices of the products and services offered. The Potential for Locational Advantages Stemming from Country to Country Companys potential for gaining competitive advantage based on where it has located its foreign activities. This is a major area of concern. Rivals may have lower-cost locations and is a matter of considerable strategic concern. Fluctuating Exchange Rate The volatility of exchange rates greatly complicates the issue of geographic cost advantages currency exchange rates often to fluctuate as much as 20 to 40 percent annually, changes of this magnitude can totally wipe out a countrys low-cost advantage or transform a former high-cost location into a competitive cost location. Domestic Government Restrictions and Requirements Domestic government enacts all kinds of measures affecting business conditions and the operation of foreign countries in their markets. Domestic government may set local content requirements of outputs made inside their borders by foreign-based companies, impose tariffs or quotas on imports, put conditions and restrictions on export to ensure adequate local suppliers, and regulate the prices of imported and locally-produced goods. In addition, outsiders may face a rules and regulations regarding technical standards, product certification, and prior approval of capital spending projects withdrawal of funds from the country and minority/majority ownership by local citizens. Some government, anxious to obtain new plants and jobs, offer foreign companies a helping hand in the forms of subsidies, privileged market access, and technical assistance. MULTI-COUNTRY COMPETITION OR GLOBAL COMPETITION Multi-country or multi-domestic competition exists when competition in one national market is independent of another national market. There is no international market, only a collection of self-contained country markets. Global competition exists when competitiveness across national markets are linked strongly to form a truly international market where leading competitors compete head-to-head in different countries. In multi-country competition, rival firms compete for national leadership. In globally competitive industries, rival firms compete for worldwide supremacy. For a company to be successful in foreign markets, its strategy must be different from one country to another. Business and competitive environment must be taken into account. STRATEGY OPTIONS FOR ENTERING AND COMPETING IN FOREIGN MAREKET Strategic options for a company entering and competing in foreign market that decides to expand outside its domestic market and compete internationally or globally. Important strategic options for a company competing in international market are listed below: †¢ Export strategies †¢ Licensing strategies †¢ Franchising strategies †¢ A multicountry strategy or global strategy Pursuing competitive advantage by competing multinationally †¢ Strategic alliance and joint ventures with foreign partners Export Strategy Company is manufacturing products and service for exporting to foreign markets. It is an excellent Initial strategy for pursuing international sales. It minimizes both the risk and capital requirements. With an export strategy, a manufacturer can limit its involvement in foreign markets by contracting with foreign wholesalers who are experienced in importing to handle the entire distribution and marketing of outputs and marketing function in their countries regions of the world. If it has more advantages to Company and has to domination to the control over these functions. In this case, a manufactures can establish its own distribution and sales organization in some or all of the target foreign markets. Either Way, a firm minimizes its direct investments in foreign countries because of its home-based production and export strategy. Whether an export strategy can be pursued successfully over the long run depends on the relative Cost competitiveness of a home country production base. In some countries, firms gain additional sale economies and firm centralizing production on several giant plants whose output capability exceeds demand in any country market. An export strategy is open for firms when the manufacturing costs in the home country are substantially higher than in foreign countries where rivals have plants or when it has relatively high-shipping costs. Unless an exporter can keep its production and shipping costs

Attitudes Towards Love in Pre-1900 and 1990s Poetry Essay -- William

Attitudes Towards Love in Pre-1900 and 1990's Poetry â€Å"The Despairing Lover† written by William Walsh was written pre 1900 whilst the second poem â€Å"I Wouldn’t Thank you for a Valentine† by Liz Lockhead was written in the 1990’s. These poems are almost a century apart. Attitude towards love changes over time and these poems represent this. I Wouldn’t Thank you for a Valentine is about how people think about Valentine’s Day in the 1990’s, while The Despairing Lover is showing what people think and how important they see love in the 1990’s. In â€Å"The Despairing Lover† William Walsh sets out the poem like a story with a beginning a middle and an end. This narrative structure of the poem gives the poem three clear stages this making the poem clearer to the reader and enables the poets written words to portray his ideas with the poem. In the first stanza William Walsh is seen to be in ‘anguish’ over his loss of his lover. However in the second stanza his mood swings to being just unhappy to suicidal, â€Å"it’s torment projecting and sadly reflecting’. This also shows how the poet William Walsh’s mind is working. In the third stanza, the poet realizes he might get ‘a new love.’ William Walsh realises his loss and believes he can find someone else. The words used in the despairing lover shows Walsh emotions, for example the use of the word â€Å"anguish† instead of angry is used because it is more dramatic. After reading the first two stanza’s the reader is almost positive that the poet is going to commit suicide and is just leading up to a big climax where he jumps. However there is an unexpected twist where the poet just calms down and thinks he can find love again. This shows the poet’s structure of the poem and how ... ...ion and repetition. Another comparison between the two poems is we are both hearing the viewpoint from the poet not from anybody else. Both the poems also have a story behind them. I wouldn’t thank you for a valentine has a hidden story and that is about something bad happening to her on valentines day. While the despairing lover story is about the poet coping with the break up from his lover. On the other hand their are also many differences between the two poems. There structure is different while the despairing lover is set out like a story with a begging a middle and an end. I wouldn’t thank you for a valentine structure is set out like a list. Another difference is that the despairing lover has rhyming couplets while the second poem doesn’t. A final difference between the two poems is the both have different opinions on love and what love is like.

Frankenstein’s Ambition :: Mary Shelley

Frankenstein’s Mistakes Victor Frankenstein was the creator of the monster in the book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. He was an ambitious man who had high hopes and dreams. Even as a child, he was very intelligent, studying the sciences and scientists of the past. But, as ambition caused the downfall of Julius Caesar, it caused the downfall of Victor Frankenstein. As the creator of his monster, he had responsibilities as a mother has towards her child. Out of pride, he ignored his responsibilities. Even after his ambitious mistake, had he acknowledged his responsibilities, he could have saved himself from destruction. He made significant mistakes out of pride and ambition that brought unhappiness and destruction to himself and his loved ones. Victor was reared in a household where he had the proper environment to learn many things. His father was well-educated and encouraged Victor to further his knowledge. There was, however, one subject that he did not encourage Victor on; it was natural philosophy. Victor’s father told him not to waste his time on such trash. This remark fueled Victor’s curiosity and he studied further into it. At the age of 13, Victor â€Å"entered with the greatest diligence into the search of the philosopher’s stone and the elixir of life; but the latter soon obtained [his] undivided attention†. This foreshadowed Victor’s biggest mistake of his life that was to happen later in his life. When he entered the university, Victor started his studies in great detail and intensity. His greatest ambition was this: he wanted to recreate life out of something which life had already parted. He â€Å"described [himself] as always having been imbued with a fervent longing t o penetrate the secrets of nature†.

Personal Philosphy Essay

It is important for teachers to develop their own educational philosophy. It is important because this philosophy defines the teacher and what they stand for. The philosophy describes the teacher’s attitude, their teaching styles, and how they feel about their students being successful. â€Å"A teacher’s personal philosophy of education is a critical element in his or her approach to guiding children along the path of enlightenment. † (Examples, 2013) Writing philosophies at the beginning of your teaching career is very helpful. Once you begin teaching for some time you notice that those initial philosophies change. Writing teaching philosophies are important to teachers because it identifies their thoughts, beliefs, and what they represent in the classroom. Personal Philosophies After thinking and realizing what I stand for in the classroom, I came up with these three philosophies that identify me. I believe that every student is a special education class can learn. Regardless of the child and their disability I believe that every child in a classroom is able to learn. It does not matter how small the progress is just as long as there is progress. I believe that inclusion has both positive and negative aspects on teachers and students. Inclusion allows students to be mainstreamed with peers their age. This gives them a chance to be around students their age as well as learn new things. Sometimes inclusion causes special services student to act out. This happens because they are not familiar with the information and they act out so they will not be embarrassed because their lack of knowledge. Finally, I believe that one-on-one time with special education students is valuable. Working with students individually helps them a lot. The teacher gets a chance to see exactly where they need help and are able to answer all their questions. Philosophies That Relate To Me â€Å"I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. † (Sample, 2013) After reading this philosophy I realized how much this should be included in one of my philosophies. I believe that each student is different. I also believe that each student should be handled differently and appropriately in order for them to show growth. Not only should a teach help the student grow educationally but they should assist them in growing socially, physically, and emotionally. It is a teacher’s job to produce growth in their students. That is why they should cover all aspects available in order to prepare their students for the real world. This philosophy covers everything I believe in as a teacher. In order for a student to learn they have to be comfortable and feel secure with their surroundings. In order for a student to open up to a teacher and peers they have to be comfortable with their surroundings. That is why it is important for teachers to provide a relaxed, secure classroom for the students. A classroom that welcomes questions, discussions, and learning. In the beginning the teacher should let the class know that questions are always welcome and that no one is allowed to laugh. Once a student realizes they have a teacher who always want to hear their questions and cares about them and how they learn, the student will feel secure and open to learn. This philosophy can be adopted as one of my own because I am aligned and stand for everything it says. â€Å"I believe the children are our future. † (Sample, 2013) Children are our future. In order for us to have a bright future, we have to prepare our youth the lead the country in an outstanding way. As a special service teacher I think it is important to prepare our students for the real word. Not only do we prepare them intellectually, we prepare them mentally, physically, and emotionally. As a teacher I think in order to prepare students to be our future we have to teach them everything they need to in order to function in society. In order for children to be our future we have to help them be successful by teaching them the necessities. In special education classes independent living skills can be taught. In order for our children to be our future, these things have to be taught. In order to be our future we have to teach them everything that is beneficial for our children to function properly in and outside of the classroom. â€Å"I believe that children learn best from expert teachers who know what they are talking about. † (Educational Philosophies, 2013) I believe that a certified teacher should be in charge of a classroom. Although there is teacher’s assistance in classrooms to help I do not believe that they should lead discussions. I think that our children should be influenced by a certified teacher. Teachers go through lots of training and take classes that teacher’s assistants do not. Although they are trained to handle behavior, they are nor trained nor certified to teach. Students should be taught by someone who knows how and what to teach. I believe that students learn from expert teachers. An expert teacher is someone who has a degree and has met all state requirements to be certified. And that is who should teach our children, an expert teacher. â€Å"I believe that an effective teacher helps leaner increase their awareness of significant social and political issues so that they can have an impact on these situation. † (Educational Philosophies, 2013) This philosophy has some points that I agree with. I do agree that teachers should keep students aware of the political and social issues that are going on. That is important so that students are aware of the current events. I think that this philosophy is important. It is important for student to know how to handle certain situations that deals with the economy and government. When students enter the real world they should have some knowledge of the government and how it works. They should be familiar with what goes on so that they are able to handle certain situations when they are older. Voting is one of these things they should be familiar with and the procedures in order to be registered to vote. This philosophy is one that I will adopt or add to one I already have. Conclusion Having a personal philosophy is very important. As a special education teacher I think it is important to have more than one. Each year I teach I either amend my philosophies each year or add a new one. The more I teach the more things I begin to believe in. A teacher and their philosophies are important because the students, parents, and community are aware of what to expect from you as an educator.

Passing: Black People and Hold Clare Essay

mountain as the victim of inequality and genial travail ( brief_Nella Larsen) The new passage was written in 1929 and start give away unitary of the most famous storys of Nella Larsen. Like new(prenominal)(a) novels which were a standardised written or so outcomeary, Passing of Nella Larsen reflects the tough invigoration of Afro-American in the 19th century, when they were struggling with racialism to rescue the equal rights. Cl are K fit onry and Irene Redfield in Passing both were born blacknesses further with giddy skin so that they could be red. However, these 2 women have different choices in their life, which lead to the tragedy when they meet separately other after twelve years. The novel hold ons with Clares death without revealing to the readers who despatchs her, which encourages the readers to designate of the un plastered end of Passing by logic every(prenominal)y get a lineing evidence throughout of the novel. By that way, Nella Larsen great power want her readers to be open-minded to actualise how people become the victim of inequality and favorable childbed in term of race and gender. endpoint her novel in timidty, Nella Larsen makes her readers curious about who is responsible for Clares death. The two practicable things office happen are whether Clare commits felo-de-se or Irene chargees her out of the window. Clare has her reasons to commit felo-de-se since her husband finds out that she was born a Negro. For him, completely Negroes are black niggardly devils and always robbing and cleanup people (70). These prejudices equal not only in jacklights mind alone alike among m some(prenominal) sporting people. These cruel prejudices and secernment had threatened Clares marriage for a long time onward her death.Clare might be always ready for the daylight that the truth about her race would have a bun in the oven everything from her. When Irene asked her whether she vox populi of how she could do i f her husband finds out about her race, she just said yes with a smile. And at the issue Clare stands near the window, she seemed unconscious of danger or uncaring. There was even so a faint smile on her full, red lips, and in her shining look (209). When Clare takes a risk by connecter the Negroes community, she might prepare for that day, for her death. However, there are also evidences for the possibility that Irene kills Clare. First, she has the motivation. In Irenes mind, Clare is wholenessness who not only that she treasured to have her cake and eat it too, but that she wanted to nibble at the cakes of other folk as well (88). in the beginning seeing Clare, Irenes life keeps personnel casualty on under her control a family with a doctor husband and two kids, living in Negroes community only Clare comes and raises the fear inside Irene that Clare and Brian, Irenes husband, might have an affair.Although Irene doesnt have any clear proofs for what she leery, but she ca n live it through the changing in stead of Brian For a minute, Irene hesitated, then turned her head, though she knew what it was the held Hughs gaze. Clare, who had suddenly clouded all her days. Brian, the father of Ted and Juniorthen she cut him smile, and the smile made his face all eager, and shining. (169-170). Secondly, the readers can realize how the presence of Clare makes Irene suffers It appall. It hurt like hellShe was very timeworn of Clare Kendry. She wanted to be free of her. (174-179). The readers also has reason to suspect Irene since she already return of how to get rid of Clare before Clares death If Clare should dieTo think, yes, to wish thatthe thought stayed with her. She could not get rid of it(187). In the party, before Clare falls out from the window, Irene is the one who open it despite of the cold outside. The ikon of Irene watching the tiny spark lose slowly to the white ground makes the readers relates to the go d feature of Clare after that (20 7).At the moment that Clare stands at the window, Irene laid a march on on Clares bare arm. iodin thought possessed her. She couldnt have Clare Kendry cast aside by Bellew. She couldnt have her free(209). And watching Clare falls out from the window, Irene wasnt sorry. She was amazed(210). Irenes thought and attitude towards Clare at the moment she falls out from the window proved that Irene, whether responsible for Clares death or not, wants Clare to die. Therefore, the readers can suspect that Irene is the one who push Clare out of the window, leading to Clares death. condescension of many clues support for the possibility that Irene kills Clare, the antecedent doesnt want an obvious end for her novel. She keeps questioning her readers about how much they could institutionalize what they see. Throughout the novel, Nella Larsen expresses her attitude in chaff of white peoples blindness when they discriminate black people without wise(p) who they really are. son of a bitch, a racist, marries a Negro woman because he believes in what he sees. Many people witness Clares death but nobody could be sure about what they saw. They even suspect Jack since he is the only white people there.By ending the novel in uncertainty, Nella Larsen questions her readers about how they interpret and understand who or what pushes people to death. If there is no racism, Clare would not commit suicide, and Jack wouldnt be suspected just because he is white. Therefore, the most suspicious person would be Irene. If Irene doesnt have any draw about keeping her life as it must be according to social norms, she wouldnt have motivation to kill Clare since she doesnt love Brian She couldnt without delay be sure that she had ever rattling known love. Not even for Brian she unperturbed intended to hold fast to the outmost shell of her marriage, to keep her life fixed, certain (201). The image of Irene put her hand on Clares bare arms before Clare falling out of the window intend for the struggling inside Irene. Irene plays the role of one who could help Clare come back to her community, but she also puts Clare in risk by not telling Clare about Jack seeing Irene with a black woman. in advance Clare died, Irene must be the one hold Clare back, but she is also suspicious for killing Irene. The truth isnt always revealed in what we see, but also in how we interpret what we know about it, which depends much on our attitude toward it. Nella Larsen let her readers have their own way to think of this uncertain end in order to question their beliefs and their values. This uncertain end of Passing also like the uncertainty of peoples life under various pressures comes from social restriction such as race and gender. Clares death symbolize for people as the victim of inequality and social restriction.
